It’s definitely been warming up here in Arizona and I’ve been craving all the cold things. I love my smoothies in drink form, but lately I’ve been wanting to switch it up. So I made this AWESOME smoothie bowl.

The key to a thick smoothie bowl is a good frozen fruit to liquid ratio. I like to start with less milk and add more if I need. If it becomes too thin, you can also just add some more frozen fruit (or ice).

I also add a little whey protein powder. As it blends, it becomes slightly thicker and fluffier. Of course, if you’d rather use plant-based protein powder, use that! It will just be a little more dense.

What You’ll Need

Equipment
Ingredients
  • Frozen banana: I’ve been cutting my ripe bananas in 1/2 and throwing them in the freezer. You could use store-bought frozen bananas as well. Also know that the riper your bananas, the sweeter the smoothie will be!
  • Frozen mango: I opt for store-bought. But you could definitely cut up some fresh mango and freeze.
  • Vanilla greek yogurt: This adds protein and tons of creaminess. I just use the great value vanilla greek yogurt but any kind works.
  • Ground flaxseed: Flaxseeds have some good omega-3s and fiber! Read more on health benefits of flaxseed here.
  • Vanilla protein powder: I really like the Optimum Nutrition vanilla ice cream protein powder. Use a powder you like the taste of, since it will slightly change the flavor.
  • Blue spirulina powder: Blue spirulina powder is a blue-green-algae and the main active component is antioxidant-phycocyanin. It’s rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, boosting the nutritional value of this smoothie bowl. It also gives it the beautiful blue color!
  • Unsweetened cashew milk: Or unsweetened almond milk.

How To Make It

  1. Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and blend!ย I start with less milk and add more if I need. My favorite blender is myย Vitamix. It comes with a plunger tool to push down thicker smoothies like this to help them blend.

Toppings

Add some fresh fruit and granola! I love homemade vanilla sea salt granola on this bowl.

To Make Dairy Free

Just switch out the whey protein powder with plant based or vegan, and use a dairy-free yogurt alternative such as coconut yogurt. This will change the amount of protein and the texture of the smoothie, as plant-based protein powders are a bit heavier/more grainy than whey. Just use one you know and love!
