Air Fryer French Fries
These air fryer french fries are simple to make and a great healthier alternative to regular fries.

Air fryer french fries are one of the best healthy hacks out there. The best side with a meal, or a great snack by themselves! Potatoes are also extremely filling so if you you have a hard time feeling full, these are for you! Here’s everything you’ll need and how to make them.
What You’ll Need
Equipment
- Air fryer: I have thisย Ninja air fryer.
- Colander: Optional, if you’d like to rinse the fries.
Ingredients
- Russet potatoes
- Olive oil: I use a spray to evenly coat the fries.
- Salt + other seasonings: Whatever seasonings you’d like! Garlic and onion powder are always delicious and I love thisย Cajun seasoning for an extra kick.
How To Make Them
- Prep potatoes: Scrub potatoes to clean off dirt, then pat dry (or peel and rinse if you prefer). Cut the potatoes into fries, about 1/4 inch thick.
- Rinse (optional): Add the fries to a colander and rinse with cold water to quickly remove extra starch. Pat completely dry.
- Season: Add fries to a large bowl, spray with oil and season with a generous pinch of salt and seasonings of choice. Toss to evenly coat all the fries.
- Air fry: Add fries to your air fryer basket. Itโs okay if they overlap some, but try not to overcrowd the basket. I always do 2 batches with my size air fryer which is a pain, but the texture turns out much better this way. Air fry at 375 F for 10-12 minutes, flipping/shaking halfway, until golden brown and crispy.

Tips
- For extra crispy fries: After air frying, let the fries cool on a cooling rack, then add back to the air fryer and cook again for another 2 minutes. This is also great if you needed to do multiple batches since it warms them all up again.
- Serve immediately: These fries are best right after they’re done. The longer they sit, the the softer they get.
FAQs
- Do I need to soak the fries in water before air frying?
- I’ve made these fries with a 20 minute ice water soak, cold water rinse, and no rinsing at all, and don’t notice a huge difference either way. I donโt think itโs necessary and would rather save my time by doing a quick rinse with cold water to remove extra starch. Feel free to try it if youโd like!
- Can I just throw all the fries in the same batch?
- While doing two separate batches is a pain, it is necessary for crispy fries (if you have a smaller air fryer like I do). They donโt need to be in a perfect single layer, but they wonโt get crisp if theyโre too crowded. That being said, if you have a larger basket and all the fries fit, definitely just do one batch!
- How do I cut the fries?
- For cooking time to be accurate, cut the potatoes into about 1/4 inch thick fries. They donโt have to be perfect, but try to get them all the same thickness so they cook evenly. A fry cutter likeย this oneย is helpful for even fries.
- Do I need to preheat my air fryer?
- I don’t preheat mine and they always turn out great. If your air fryer specifically instructs preheating, then I would preheat.

Ingredients
- 2 medium russet potatoes (~430 g) or 1 large
- spray of olive oil (3 g)
- big pinch salt
- seasonings of choice
Instructions
- Peel and rinse the potatoes (or scrub them off if you'd like to keep the peels on), and pat dry. Cut into 1/4 inch fries, add to a strainer and rinse with cold water (optional). Dry off completely.
- Add fries to a bowl, spray with oil and season with a big pinch of salt and seasonings of choice. Toss to evenly coat.
- Add seasoned fries to the air fryer basket, making sure not to overcrowd, and air fry at 375 F for 10-12 minutes, flipping/shaking halfway through, until golden brown and crispy. I do 2 batches, but you may only need to do 1 depending on the size of your air fryer.
- Optional: After fries have cooled, add all of them back to the air fryer to cook again for another 2 minutes for extra crisp. Enjoy immediately!
Notes
- Rinsing: I’ve made these fries with a 20 minute ice water bath, cold rinse, and no rinse and don’t notice a huge different either way. To save time I usually rinse with cold water to quickly remove extra starch.
- Seasonings: I love garlic powder and onion powder. Cajun is also delicious for a slight kick.
- Enjoy immediately: The longer these fries sit, the softer they get.
