Easy Homemade Taco Seasoning Recipe
Looking for an easy way to level up your home-cooked meals? This homemade taco seasoning will transform your dishes and made with just a few spices you probably already have on hand.

I whipped this up one day when I was making my crockpot Mexican shredded chicken and forgot to grab a taco seasoning packet at the store. I was shocked at how much better it tasted and have been making it this way ever since!
What You’ll Need
- Chili powder: Be sure to use an American-style chili powder (non-American pure chili powders are often just ground dried chiles and way too spicy).
- Ground cumin
- Fine sea salt
- Black pepper: I like the fine ground black pepper for a smoother seasoning blend. You can also use freshly cracked pepper.
- Paprika
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Dried oregano
- Red chili flakes
No additives, no fillers, just a few spices from your cabinet. You can feel good knowing what’s in your spice mix and save some money too!

How To Make It
- Gather your spices, measure and mix, then store in an airtight container along with your other seasonings.
How To Use
- 2 tablespoons of homemade taco seasoning can be substituted for 1 taco seasoning packet.
To Store
This will stay fresh stored in an airtight container for at least 6 months. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll be running out long before then. Just make sure it’s sealed well!
Customizations
You can easily change the flavor of this easy homemade taco seasoning depending on your preferences.
- Make it spicier: Add more red chili flakes or a dash of cayenne pepper.
- Low sodium: If you’re trying to lower your sodium intake, use less salt.
- If there’s a particular spice you love, just add more of it! You can easily bring out the flavor of whatever you love.
