Spending more time in the kitchen means I’ve had to improvise on more than one occasion. In this case, forgetting to buy croutons for my salad. I really didn’t want to go back to the store and I had some bread in the pantry…I figured they couldn’t be that hard to make myself.

But even I was shocked at how easy they were, and after a couple batches I figured out how to make them exactly how I wanted. Here’s everything I use and how I like to do it!

What You’ll Need

Equipment
Ingredients
  • Bread: I use white sandwich bread, but any bread works.
  • Oil: Olive or avocado oils are my go to. I’ve been loving the Chosen Foods 100% pure avocado oil spray.
  • Italian seasoning: Pre-made is great, but you could also use a blend of Italian seasonings (thyme, oregano, basil, rosemary).
  • Garlic powder
  • Salt + pepper

How To Make Them

  1. Preheat oven and prep pan: Preheat oven to 375 F and line your sheet pan with parchment. Set aside.
  2. Slice the bread: Use a bread knife to cut the bread into roughly 3/4 in cubes. Just eyeball it, doesn’t have to be perfect.
  3. Spray and season: Add bread pieces to the pan and spray with avocado or olive oil. If you don’t have spray, drizzle a little on. Add Italian seasoning, garlic powder, salt and pepper and toss around with your hands to evenly coat the bread pieces.
  4. Bake: Bake for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway. Keep an eye on them so they don’t burn – every oven is a little different and they can go from beautifully golden brown to burnt pretty quickly. After I flip them I check them often.

Tips

  • Check often: As mentioned above, these can go from perfectly baked to burnt very quickly. Just like toast. Make sure you check on them often and once they’re golden brown and crispy, take them out.
  • Adjust to taste: The amount of seasoning you use it totally up to you. All I do is lightly sprinkle each seasoning on before tossing it all together. Use whatever seasonings you want to change the flavor.
  • Bread: If you are using a denser bread, you may need to bake longer.

To Store

Store homemade croutons in an airtight container in a cool, dark place up to 2 weeks. Make sure they are completely cooled/dehydrated before storing.
