How To Roast The Perfect Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are one of my favorite sides to prepare, especially during the holiday season. They are so yummy, extremely filling, and just make me feel cozy inside.

They are also very nutritious, packed with fiber, vitamins and minerals. Sweet potatoes are a complex carbohydrate, meaning they digest slower and help avoid a blood sugar spike. Read more on sweet potato benefits here.

Tips For The Perfect Roasted Sweet Potatoes

  • Use a good peeler: Peeling sweet potatoes is so much easier when you have a sharp peeler. I love this kind.
  • Use a sharp knife: Sweet potatoes are harder to cut than other veggies, so you’ll want to make sure your knife is sharp. Of course, be very careful cutting, but having a sharper knife will make it so you don’t have to press down as hard. I use the largest knife in this set from Amazon.
  • Cut 3/4-1 inch cubes: Try to cut your sweet potato cubes as evenly as you can, about 3/4 inch to 1 inch thick. This doesn’t have to be perfect, but the more even your cubes, the more even they will bake.
  • Spread in an even layer: Make sure each cube is touching the parchment or foil. No stacked pieces. This will also help with even baking.

Ingredients:

  • Sweet potatoes: About 3 medium size sweet potatoes will fill up a half-sheet baking pan.
  • Olive Oil Spray: Any cooking spray would work, but I like to use olive oil spray. A few light mists is all you need, and keeps the fat content lower.
  • Salt: My favorites to use are coarse kosher salt or pink Himalayan salt, but use what you have.
  • Pepper: Just regular black fine ground pepper. Again, use what you’ve got.
  • Cinnamon: I love the warmth this adds. Use more or less depending on your preference :)

Customize

This dish is the easiest thing to customize. Feel free to get creative with different spices you love! Some things you could try:

  • Cumin: add a bit of spice to compliment the sweet.
  • Pumpkin pie spice: Go all out sweet vibe.
  • Taco seasoning: If you’re using these in taco bowls or mexican style dishes, add some taco seasoning!

Toppings:

  • Melted cheese: I love melting some fresh grated cheese on top of these. Sweet/savory.
  • Balsamic glaze: This is especially amazing on harvest bowls with some other roasted veggies.
  • Loaded: You could top these with chili, cheese, sour cream, and bacon bits to make a loaded potato dish.
  • Marshmallow with Caramel or Maple Syrup: Make a dessert by topping these with some marshmallow, syrup, and some crushed pecans!
