If you’re looking for a delicious weeknight dinner recipe that’s easy to make and quick to clean up, this one pan garlic parmesan pasta with chicken sausage is for you.

Garlic parmesan penne pasta with chicken sausage, basil and lemon in a white bowl with another bowl in the background.

I’m in love with one pan recipes. They’re my go-to when I need something quick, easy and reliable.

This pasta recipe is less than 10 ingredients, with zero handling of raw meat required. And it’s so quick. Takes me 20 minutes.

What You’ll Need

Equipment:
  • Large deep skillet with lid: Like this one.
Ingredients:
  • Chicken sausage: I love these parmesan and garlic ones, but use any flavor you prefer. For accurate nutrition/macros, look for ones around 100 cals/12-14g protein per link.
  • Salted butter: Or unsalted (you may just need to add a pinch of salt at the end).
  • Garlic
  • Chicken broth
  • Fat free milk: Or milk of choice. I use Fairlife.
  • Protein or chickpea pasta: I’m loving the Barilla protein penne pasta. Sub any brand/shape pasta you prefer.
  • Parmesan cheese: Freshly grated – look for the block.
  • Fresh basil and lemon juice: Optional (BUT SO GOOD), to serve.

How To Make It

  1. Prep and cook the chicken sausage: Slice the chicken sausages into thin coins, about 1/4 inch thick. Toss into the pan to cook on medium high heat (no need to spray) for about 3 minutes, until edges have crisped up and have some color. The chicken sausages are already fully cooked, but this improves the flavor and texture. Remove from pan and set aside.
  2. Add butter and garlic: Mince the garlic and add to the same pan with some butter. Cook on medium heat for a couple minutes (being careful not to burn the garlic), stirring constantly.
  3. Add broth, milk, and pasta: Add chicken broth and milk to the butter and garlic, gently stirring to combine. Bring to a gentle boil, then stir in the dry pasta. Cover and let cook for 8 minutes (or according to pasta box instructions), stirring occasionally.
  4. Add cheese: While the pasta is cooking, grate the parmesan cheese. Once the pasta is done, immediately turn off the heat and gradually incorporate the parmesan, stirring to fully combine. Optional, but I also like to add some black pepper here. Serve with more parmesan, fresh basil, lemon juice and enjoy!

Tips

  • Consistency: The sauce will seem a bit thin at first, but it sets up nicely after a few minutes.
  • Careful not to burn garlic: Make sure the heat isn’t too high when adding the butter and garlic and be sure to stir constantly.
  • More protein: If you want even more protein, you could sub chicken breast, ground chicken, or ground turkey in place of the chicken sausage.

To Store

After completely cooling, store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge up to 4 days. I just reheat in the microwave in 30 second increments until it’s as warm as I like.

Instructions

  • Set a large deep skillet on medium high heat. Slice chicken sausages into about 1/4 inch coins, then add to skillet and cook for about 3 minutes or until the've got some color and edges have crisped up. Remove and set aside.
  • In the same pan, add butter and minced garlic and cook for a couple minutes, stirring constantly (being careful not to burn the garlic). Add chicken broth and milk and bring to a gentle boil.
  • Once boiling, add dry pasta and stir, making sure it's all submerged. Cover and cook 8 minutes (or according to box directions), stirring occasionally.
  • While pasta is cooking, grate the parmesan cheese. Once pasta is done, immediately turn off the heat, gradually stir in the parmesan and add the cooked chicken sausage (optional, but I like to add a little black pepper here as well). Serve with basil, lemon juice, and more parmesan, if desired. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Consistency: The sauce may seem thin at first, but will set up nicely after a few minutes.
  • Cheese: 2 oz freshly grated will be about 3/4 cup.
  • Chicken sausage: Any flavor you like (I use the garlic and parmesan ones linked above). For similar nutrition, look for ones that are about 100 cals/12-14g protein per link.

We tried this last night and absolutely LOVED it. My ten year old said it’s her new fav and the only downside was when my husband ate all the leftovers.
Thank you so much for this recipe. We will be making this again soon.

Husband approved! I unfortunately thought I would do it my way and add in cooked banza pasta, because I thought of how banza pasta foams up. Then I realized the noodles were supposed to absorb the liquid! So I just let it simmer down a few mins and did a cornstarch slurry to thicken up a bit and it was all gone by the end of lunch! Husband said to make it again! Will be doing it the way its written though!

    1. Thanks for your comment! I’m looking to do it with banza too and was wondering how it would turn out …
