Quick and Easy Hawaiian Haystacks
These quick and easy Hawaiian haystacks will be your go-to for get-togethers or quick weeknight dinners. Completely customizable too!

I remember always having Hawaiian haystacks at all the after-church get togethers. It seemed like the go-to meal for small gatherings. Now I can see why! It’s so easy to throw together, and you can make it exactly how you want with your choice of toppings.
To make this a bit more macro-friendly, I use bone broth and light sour cream. I also add in two whole cans of chicken. This gives the gravy a thickness that I love and make it much higher in protein. I highly recommend using a high quality canned chicken, like the ones from Costco.
Since everything is pretty much all canned or pre-packaged, this comes together so quick. Just get your rice cooking at the very start cause it will take the longest!
What You’ll Need
For The Gravy
- Cream of chicken condensed soup: Makes the gravy thick and rich.
- Chicken bone broth: Bone broth adds more protein than regular chicken broth. Sub regular or reduced sodium chicken broth if you’d like.
- Light sour cream: Lowers the fat a tad while keeping everything creamy and smooth. Can sub regular sour cream.
- Canned chicken: Makes this so easy. I like to rinse the chicken right in the can a few times to get rid of any filmy weirdness going on. Like I mentioned before, I recommend a high quality canned chicken, like the ones from Costco.
- Black pepper: I season the gravy with black pepper only, as I find there’s enough saltiness from the broth, condensed soup, and chicken.
To Serve
- Cooked white rice: Cooked however you like. I use a rice cooker and get it cooking first since it will take the longest.
Any or all of these toppings:
- Celery
- Black olives
- Green onion
- Pineapple tidbits
- Chow mein crunchy noodles
- Tomatoes
- Green peas
- Shredded cheese
How To Make It
- Get your rice cooking: The rice will take the longest. Use a rice cooker or whatever method you like.
- Make the gravy: Combine soup, broth, sour cream, canned chicken and black pepper in a small saucepan and stir until combined. I like to rinse and drain the canned chicken a few times before adding. Let this stay warm on very low heat while the rice finishes cooking.
- Gather the toppings: Cut up any toppings you choose. Assemble the haystacks with rice first, then gravy, and any other toppings last!
That’s it! A crowd pleaser for sure. This is one of my go-to’s when I’m having people over for dinner or cooking for a small group. If you are making this for more people, you will likely need to double or triple the recipe.
